In plain terms

Home watch in Schroon Lake, in plain terms.

Northway Home LLC provides home watch in Schroon Lake, New York, about 55 minutes from our base in Saratoga County. A named steward visits the house twice a month, weekly or twice a week, walks a written 24-line checklist, photographs what they find, records the interior temperature and humidity, and posts a same-day report to an owner dashboard. Camps here are simpler than lake houses to the south but more exposed. The checklist covers the roofline, the fuel level, the furnace or boiler and the interior readings, which matter most when the response time is longest. Plans are $250, $500 or $1,000 a month; anything outside the scheduled visits is $95 an hour.

02Winter here

What winter does to a house in Schroon Lake.

Schroon is Adirondack Park winter. The lake freezes hard and stays frozen into April, the snow is deeper, and when the power goes out it can stay out. Everything that happens to an empty house happens faster here.

  1. 01Power cuts last longer than on the Northway corridor south of here. A house without heat for three days in February is a house with frozen lines.

  2. 02Private roads and camp roads are plowed last, or not at all. We plan visits around access and carry what we need to reach the door.

  3. 03Snow load on camp roofs, screened porches and woodsheds is a real weight by mid-winter. We photograph the roofline on every visit.

  4. 04Propane tanks run down faster in deep cold. A tank at ten percent in January is the visit before the heat goes off.

  5. 05Paradox Lake and the smaller ponds freeze earlier than Schroon itself, and shore ice moves docks that were not pulled.

We provide home watch across Schroon Lake, including Schroon Lake, Paradox Lake, Adirondack, Pottersville, Brant Lake, Chestertown. If your house is nearby and not on that list, ask; the answer is usually yes.

Weekly is the cadence most owners in Schroon Lake choose and the one we recommend for a house that stands empty from autumn to spring: in February a supply line can freeze within two days of the heat stopping, and a weekly visit catches the temperature drop, the tripped breaker or the low propane tank first. Twice-weekly suits waterfront with a boathouse and outbuildings, or a house that cannot afford a bad week. Two visits a month suits a well-built house you visit often in a season you trust.
